AFRICAN VOICE IN MOSTON was established in 2011 by four African women with lived experience who wanted to create awareness and address the marginalisation, language and cultural barriers problems faced by Skilled African migrant and their families who have adopted Britain as their host country. The services we provide impact immensely on their livelihood and empower service users to access resources that would enable them to contribute to their respective communities.
AFRICAN VOICE IN MOSTON (AVIM) is a charity based in Harpurhey, Manchester, in one of England’s most deprived localities. AFRICAN VOICE IN MOSTON was set up in response to macro and micro statutory failings, by individuals with lived experience who understand the everyday dilemma faced by the local people. The charity provides hope and empowerment alongside delivering tangible services that directly benefit local people and communities. We currently have no paid staff. Instead, AFRICAN VOICE IN MOSTON is run by volunteers, including the senior management team, who manage over 1560 caseloads and activities a year as a charity serving the needs of the local community.
AFRICAN VOICE IN MOSTON operates a strength-based model which can be divided into two streams of activity. The first stream is the service delivery strand:
Service-Delivery Strand
We work independently and in partnership with statutory, VCSE, and private organisations, running workshops and providing training and support, including one-to-one, group work, and signposting, as well as other activities. This can include support for vulnerable adults referred through Manchester Adult Care Services, putting back-to-work training and opportunities, budgeting, debt management advice, etc.
Community Engagement Strand
Further to tackling social exclusion, our community engagement strand offers holistic support, including a weekly food bank, addressing issues of cultural and social stigmatisation, as well as pastoral support services. Many of our clients are vulnerable migrants, survivors of domestic abuse, etc., who face multiple barriers; AFRICAN VOICE IN MOSTON works hard to ensure the support offered creates a sense of belonging, community and positive identity in their new homeland, whether that be by geography, language, culture or class.
We are a community-based organisation that can identify and channel potential within the community through volunteering, skills development, confidence building and self-worth.
We work closely with service users, residents, multi-agencies, and other community organisations to address issues that would enable empowerment and resources access beneficial to the community that encourages and develop positive social connections and relationships. Explore our services now.
